Apple's newest release
At the beginning of the year the famous company we know as Apple produced a brand new product. Many people had long awaited this new piece of technology and had been waiting for quite a while for it to arrive. On January 27, Steve Jobs, the C.E.O. of Apple Inc., released information to the public that the anticipated software would soon be available. It is called the iPad.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not against Apple. In fact, I like and support many of their products but this new device isn’t quite what I was expecting. I know many people these days carry around a musical device to listen to when they feel like it and a lot of those devices are iPods, created by Apple. But I’ll get back to the iPad.
Jobs said that the iPad was supposed to revolutionize the way we look at electronics, as well as the web. Apple was trying to achieve a product between a laptop and a small music device. Let’s look a little deeper though.
With a stunning look at first the iPad impresses the eye on site. Its touch screen, just like the iPod Touch and iPhone, is definitely a plus. The iPad is high resolution and has a 9.7 inch LED backlit screen. It weighs only a pound and a half, and is also only half an inch thick. The battery life can last up to ten hours and you can connect to the internet through WiFi. You can also pay extra for the 3G version, which allows you to connect to the internet anywhere as long as you can get a signal from a cell phone service 3G provider. This is much more convenient, but you do have to pay for the service monthly.
Other features of the iPad include listening to music, watching movies, reading books on the screen, looking at photos, connecting directly to your iTunes, a touch screen keyboard, and using all the touch applications used from the iPod touch and iPhone. Many brand new applications are also being made specifically for the iPad. The accelerometer allows you to turn the iPad anyway and the screen will adjust to the way you are holding it so you will always see it right side up.
Overall, the iPad is an impressive piece of technology. I even looked into buying it myself since I’m looking for a laptop to use for school and carry on into college. The only problem? It’s already been made. The iPad is just like an iPod Touch that has been stretched out. People including me were hoping for more on the computer side. However, the iPad doesn’t even have a computer operating system. You can’t run any programs on it except for the ones that Apple releases in applications. Those can be fun and useful in some situations, but they aren’t quite school applicable and you have to pay for most of them.
So Apple didn’t really make the goal that they were aiming for. I don’t think as many people will buy it as if Apple had made it more on the computer side. There could be revisions in the future, but for now if you wanted an iPad, I would probably recommend just taking an iPod touch instead.
