FCCLA Spreads Love

FCCLA brought a festive feeling to Belle Plaine schools during the annual Valentine’s Day carnation sale. Members of FCCLA started selling red, pink, and white carnations to students and teachers at the high school, middle school, and elementary school. Purchased carnations also came with a personalized message to the recipient. Flowers were handed out on Friday, Feb. 12 before Valentine’s Day.

While it may be fun to give and receive these flowers which have now become a tradition, a substantial amount of work goes into this fundraiser. FCCLA members begin selling carnations at $2.00 a piece a week prior to the delivery date. Just in case there are some last minute shoppers, Ms. Poss orders extras. Volunteers meet in Ms. Poss’ room after school the day before delivery to attach messages to the appropriate flower and organize by homeroom teacher. On Thursday, Feb. 11, Ms. Poss and Mrs. Reymer directed and helped FCCLA members get ready for the big disbursement day. FCCLA President Carlee Hotaling, jr., Sydney Montoya, jr., Mallorie Thurman, so., and Katie Dunn, fr., all arrived ready to work and prepare the carnations.

On the day of delivery, FCCLA members make sure flowers are given to all three schools. When asked which school buys and gives the most flowers, Ms. Poss said it was between the high school and middle school. However, she does note, “The middle school gets excited about this particular fundraiser because it is usually their first venture into love.”

FCCLA has been conducting this fundraiser for many years and it looks like they will for many years to come.
