Boys Basketball New Year Resolution: Come Back Winning

Starting a season with a tournament and 3 games the boys are already doing better than their last year record, winning two games before winter break and showing much potential for the rest of the season. They didn’t let up at all on their training though, practicing even over the time out of school the students had for winter break.

Some of the individual athletes already have had awards given to them at the Marion tournament like Ben Gooch, jr., who was the only one on the team to receive the All-Tournament team award. Tyler Jantz, so., and Gabe Stewart, so., both obtained All-Academic team awards. The team was also overall awarded with the Sportsmanship Award for the tournament.

So after an almost two week vacation, the Belle Plaine Dragons are once again running up and down the court struggling against other teams for a lead that will give them a win. Their latest, and first basketball game after break, was against Bluestem and it remained a close game until the end, only allowing the boys to win by 4 points with the final score 45-41. As for their last game before break against Douglass, it happened to be more of a struggle leaving them with a loss of 30 with the score 73-43.

At the mid-season Sterling tournament, the boys lost their first game on Monday against Ellsworth but came back to beat Blustem by nearly 25 points, 49-26, on Tuesday. They lost in a close game to the home team Sterling, 53-60.

Since the tournament, the boys have yet to pick up another win, falling to Wichita Trinity, Douglass, and Cheney. They travel to Garden Plain on Feb. 12 with hopes of getting another victory before their last home game against Bluestem on Feb. 16.
